ROTEC Secures EPC Tender for Water Reclamation Plant at Ta’ Barkat Wastewater Treatment Plant, Malta

ROTEC in collaboration with AST, our sister company, is excited to announce that it has successfully secured the EPC tender to design, deliver, install, and commission a state-of-the-art Water Reclamation Plant at the Ta’ Barkat Wastewater Treatment Plant in Malta.

This project underscores ROTEC’s leadership in delivering innovative, sustainable water reuse solutions at an EPC level.

This EPC project will increase the production of high-quality reclaimed water, also known as ‘New Water,’ by up to 10,000 cubic meters per day (2.6 MGD), addressing the rising demand for sustainable water sources. Utilizing ROTEC’s advanced Flow Reversal Reverse Osmosis (FR-RO) technology, and AST’s expertise as an experienced project company. The plant will transform treated sewage effluent into Indirect Potable Reuse with Direct Potable Reuse (DPR) quality water with up to 90% recovery, while integrating an energy recovery system to enhance efficiency, minimize operational costs and CO2 footprint.

ROTEC and ASTs’ EPC scope for this project includes the design, delivery, and installation of all sub-systems to ensure seamless functionality and high operational efficiency.  ROTEC and AST will supply, and commission specialized equipment tailored to the plant’s specific requirements. Necessary building and reservoir modifications will be carried out in collaboration with a local partner to support expanded operations. To ensure long-term success, ROTEC will provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to equip local teams with the expertise necessary for continuous operation and maintenance.

By leveraging ROTEC’s industry-leading FR-RO technology and AST’s EPC expertise, this project sets a new benchmark for water sustainability and provides a more efficient alternative to traditional desalination. This is one of many IPR/DPR-quality water projects ROTEC has implemented worldwide, especially in the U.S., where efforts are underway to advance DPR legislation in many states.

As the demand for high-quality reclaimed water continues to grow, this initiative represents a crucial step toward enhancing water security and reducing reliance on freshwater resources. The increased capacity will not only help optimize Malta’s water management strategies but also strengthen resilience against water scarcity.

We look forward to keeping you updated as we bring this impactful EPC project to life!

About Ta’ Barkat Sewage Treatment Plant
The Ta’ Barkat Sewage Treatment Plant is Malta’s largest wastewater treatment facility, processing approximately 60,000 cubic meters of sewage daily. Located near Xgħajra, the plant plays a critical role in improving coastal water quality and supporting sustainable water management. It features advanced treatment technology, anaerobic sludge digestion for energy generation, and a “New Water” polishing plant for high-quality water reuse. A planned expansion will further enhance reclaimed water production for agriculture and industry.
